Innovation@Kenmore: Lighted Refrigerator Produce Compartments

Would fruit and veggies last longer if they were exposed to light during their time in a refrigerator?

As we know, photosynthesis is vital for all plant life on Earth. We also know that plants can be grown indoors with proper lighting. So isn’t it logical that produce sitting in a dark refrigerator will go bad sooner than produce sitting in a refrigerator being exposed to light?

It would be very easy to create a refrigerator that had lighted produce compartments. LED’s would likely emit the kind of light needed to keep produce fresh and could do so in an energy efficient manner. These compartments could be constructed in a manner that made them lightproof thereby preventing the light from effecting the other contents of the refrigerator.
